The Executive Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. (Barr.) Adenike Oluyemisi Rosiji, has praised the Federal Government for the rollout of the Household Prosperity Empowerment (HOPE) Initiative, which delivered ₦75,000 cash grants to vulnerable households in the area. The distribution ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the Ojokoro LCDA Secretariat, marking another plus in efforts to alleviate poverty and strengthen grassroots development.

The programme, implemented in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction,  the National Cash Transfer Office, the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment, the Lagos State Cash Transfer Office, and the World Bank, targeted beneficiaries selected from the National Social Register (NSR) — a comprehensive database identifying poor and vulnerable households across Nigeria.

Each beneficiary received a customized ATM card preloaded with ₦75,000, providing immediate financial relief amid the economic challenges following the removal of fuel subsidy. The initiative also aims to foster human capacity development and empower recipients to improve their livelihoods sustainably.

Speaking at the event, Hon. The Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Akinola Idowu, on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, officially launched the distribution of customised Conditional Cash Transfer ATM cards to residents of the council area.

The initiative, held at the Orile-Agege LCDA Secretariat in Arigbanla, is a collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, the National Social Investments Programme Agency (NSIPA), the National Cash Transfer Office, and the Lagos State Cash Transfer Office.

In his address, Hon. Idowu described the programme as a beacon of renewed hope for the most vulnerable households, adding that it goes beyond financial support to empower residents, restore dignity, and strengthen livelihoods.

“This programme is not just about financial assistance; it is about empowering our people, restoring dignity, and strengthening livelihoods in Orile-Agege,” he said.

Beneficiaries, selected from the National Social Register (NSR), received ATM cards preloaded with financial support ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦75,000. A total of 965 beneficiaries benefited in this first batch, with distribution commencing at 9:00 a.m.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mojeed Dawuda, LGA Coordinator for LASOCU, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing poverty and ensuring the Renewed Hope Agenda translates into tangible benefits for households across the nation.

Hon. Idowu commended the Federal Government and partner agencies for their support and assured residents of Orile-Agege LCDA that his administration remains dedicated to programmes that uplift the vulnerable and foster community development.

“Some had exceeded the Key Performance Indicator of the administration, while a few others did not. It was also discovered that some have strength in other areas, and the administration needs to be rejigged to bring about the desired growth and development,” Bago stated. He emphasized the importance of leveraging the strengths of his appointees to reposition the government for optimal service delivery.

The governor expressed gratitude to the outgoing cabinet members for their contributions, describing their collective efforts as instrumental to the progress of the administration. He added that some of the former commissioners may be reappointed to new roles or redeployed to portfolios better suited to their strengths.

Despite the dissolution, key principal officers retained their positions to ensure continuity in governance. These include the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, and other senior aides directly attached to the governor’s office.

Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished law enforcement leaders, Solomon Ehigiator Arase, who passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja following a brief illness. The news was confirmed by his family, who described him as a committed patriot and reformer who served the nation with distinction.

Born on June 21, 1956, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State*, Arase’s illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which he left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security and development landscape. He graduated with a degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University in 1980, joined the Nigeria Police Force in December 1981, and later obtained a Law degree from the University of Benin and a Master’s degree from the University of Lagos. His academic excellence extended to advanced studies at the National Defence College, making him a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

Arase served as Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police*, appointed in April 2015 by then-President Goodluck Jonathan. During his tenure, he introduced key reforms that revolutionized policing, including the establishment of the Intelligence Response Team, the Complaint Response Unit to tackle police misconduct, and Safer Highway Patrols, which improved traveler safety nationwide. He also issued a groundbreaking directive banning officers from searching citizens' phones, strengthening civil liberties and public trust in the police force.

In January 2023, Arase was appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) by former President Muhammadu Buhari, where he championed merit-based recruitment, transparency in promotions, and professionalism. Even after retiring in June 2024, his contributions to election security, neutrality, and police reforms continued to shape the Force.

Beyond his policing career, Arase was deeply committed to education and youth empowerment. Through the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF), he awarded scholarships to children of deceased police officers and students from underserved communities. In 2025, SEAF supported 29 beneficiaries across disciplines like Medicine, Engineering, Criminology, and Business Administration—a testament to his belief in nurturing Nigeria’s future leaders.

Arase also represented Nigeria internationally, participating in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia, further solidifying his reputation as a globally respected law enforcement officer. His leadership extended to roles such as Principal Staff Officer to three former IGPs, Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, and Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of intelligence.

Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with colleagues, public figures, and citizens describing him as a principled leader, reformer, and patriot. Many credit him as one of the most effective IGPs in recent history, with his tenure marked by integrity, service, and excellence. His legacy lives on through the many lives he impacted and the reforms he instituted.

Solomon Arase is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course. “Nigeria has lost a rare gem,” said a senior police officer. “He bridged generations with his wisdom and dedication.”

For months, the market had been a theatre of uncertainty—demolition threats, simmering rivalries, and rumors swirling among traders. But yesterday, the council boss set the record straight: the market, she affirmed, belongs to the people of Ojokoro.

 “Ojokoro LCDA’s duty to defend traders and their market is beyond question. We will not falter in safeguarding your economic lifeline,” Rosiji declared, drawing nods of approval across the Council Hall.

Hon. Rosiji recounted swift interventions she had spearheaded: from correspondence with the Divisional Police Officer to directives for erecting signboards boldly stating the council’s ownership of the market land. She also firmly dismissed claims that she had deployed thugs to the market. “Our actions have always been lawful, transparent, and in defense of your livelihoods,” she assured the traders.

The Chairman urged market leaders to set aside rivalries, maintain peace, and foster cooperation. Environmental cleanliness, she added, would remain a top priority: “A market that feeds the people must also safeguard their health.”

One of the more sensitive issues raised was the selection of new market leadership. Hon. Rosiji called for the nomination of a new market chairman and executives, noting that the Iyaloja would be exempted from the election process to ensure fairness and neutrality.

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants, significantly raising wages across various sectors to alleviate economic hardship and improve worker welfare. The announcement, made during a meeting with organised labour at Government House, Owerri, was met with jubilant celebrations from workers and pensioners alike.

Under the revised structure, the state’s minimum wage has increased from N76,000 to N104,000, surpassing the nationally approved N70,000. Medical doctors in the state also saw their entry-level salary jump from N215,000 to N508,000, while other health professionals will now earn a minimum of N108,000. Tertiary institution teachers’ salaries were also boosted, rising from N119,000 to N222,000.

Governor Uzodimma described the wage increase as an investment in the people, emphasizing its importance in addressing the rising cost of living. "We have always recognised that no government can succeed without a friendly and cordial relationship with organised labour, which we rightly describe as the engine room of government," he stated. The governor added that the move reflects his administration’s commitment to fostering a productive relationship with workers and pensioners.

The announcement was accompanied by further financial relief for pensioners, as Uzodimma ordered the immediate release of N16 billion to clear outstanding gratuity arrears across the state. According to pensioners’ chairman, Dr. J.B. Ugochukwu, many retirees had already benefited from earlier payments alongside regular pensions.

Governor Uzodimma attributed the state’s ability to implement these changes to significant fiscal improvements. Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has risen from less than N400 million in 2020 to nearly N4 billion, while federal allocation increased from N7.5 billion to over N13 billion. He credited these gains to reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu and said the state’s debt profile had dropped from N280 billion to under N100 billion.

A court in Equatorial Guinea, Wednesday handed an eight-year jail term for embezzlement to a senior official, Baltasar Ebang Engonga who separately won notoriety for appearing in a series of sex tapes with other officials’ wives.

Vanguard News reports that The Bioko provincial tribunal convicted Baltasar Ebang Engonga of diverting money claimed as professional travel expenses for personal use. 

Engonga, the married former head of the national financial investigation agency, and five other senior officials were accused of embezzling expenses worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in the oil-rich central African state.

Nicknamed “Bello”, Engonga made world headlines in November with the sex tapes, some of them filmed in his office at the finance ministry, published on social media while he was in detention pending the embezzlement case.

The clips prompted a wave of online parodies, including songs and dances and posts about a spoof virility drug dubbed “Balthazariem”.

Mitogo said the provincial court handed Engonga an eight-year sentence and a fine worth $220,000.

The oversight exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Medical Health Officer (MHO), Dr. Meya Adekunle Samuel, covered key healthcare facilities, including Ipaja Primary Health Centre, Ishefun Primary Health Centre, Cele/Apata Primary Health Centre, and Bada Ayobo Primary Health Centre. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared its readiness to embark on what it terms the “mother of all strikes” unless the Federal Government fulfills its promises regarding the 2009 agreement aimed at revitalizing public universities. Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday in Calabar, Dr. Peter Ubi, chairman of the University of Calabar (Unical) chapter, said the union is prepared to commence industrial action once the national body gives the directive after its August 28 meeting.

Dr. Ubi highlighted the union’s demands, which include renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, sustainable funding for Nigerian universities, revitalization of decaying infrastructure, and the payment of outstanding wage awards and salary arrears. He criticized the government for failing to resolve these issues despite repeated negotiations, stating, “Unfortunately, government, in its characteristics, has paid deaf ears to our demands and has constantly pushed our union to embark on strike. We are therefore left with no option but to strike.”

The Unical chapter also raised concerns over the proliferation of universities across the country, calling for a halt to the establishment of private universities. Dr. Ubi argued that the unchecked growth of tertiary institutions without adequate standards poses a threat to academic quality. “We currently have 72 federal universities and 159 private universities, bringing the total to 339 universities, giving each state and the FCT an average of nine universities, excluding polytechnics and colleges of education. Extending the moratorium to private institutions will help ensure quality over quantity,” he said.

The call for restraint aligns with the Federal Government’s recent decision to impose a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The government cited the proliferation of underutilized institutions, overstretched resources, and declining academic quality as reasons for the freeze. Despite this, the Federal Executive Council recently approved nine new universities, sparking concerns about policy inconsistency. Critics, including ASUU, argue that resources should be directed toward strengthening existing institutions rather than creating new ones.

The training, scheduled to begin on 1st September 2025, will run from Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm, and cover a wide range of ICT skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, Corel Suite, Networking, and other software packages. Speaking on the importance of the program, Hon. Rosiji emphasized the critical role of digital literacy in empowering youths to compete in today’s technology-driven world. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the incident, which took place at 11:09 a.m. at KM 49 between Kubwa Station and Asham Station, near Abuja.

In a statement issued by Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, the bureau expressed sympathy for the injured passengers and extended support to all affected. According to Oladeji, "Current information indicates that six individuals sustained injuries, but thankfully, there were no fatalities."

The derailment caused chaos as passengers scrambled for safety, with eyewitnesses describing the scene as alarming and disorganized. Many passengers initially feared the worst, recalling past security incidents along the same corridor. Emergency responders were swiftly deployed to the site, and those injured were treated on-site before being transported to nearby hospitals for further care.

The Director-General of NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh, assured the public of a thorough investigation into the derailment. "We have deployed a team of investigators to the site to gather evidence, engage stakeholders, and uncover the root cause of this accident. Our commitment is to ensure safer rail transport for Nigerians through transparent, independent investigations," Badeh stated.

Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has leveled serious allegations against a close associate, accusing them of betraying him during the July 2021 invasion of his Ibadan residence by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS). Igboho made the revelation during a visit to the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, in Ondo State.

According to Igboho, the betrayal directly led to what he described as an attempt on his life. He recounted that DSS operatives gained access to his home through his personal assistant, who was allegedly forced to reveal his room. Igboho further alleged that a trusted friend tipped off the operatives about his cat, instructing them not to let it escape.

"When my house was invaded by DSS operatives, they wanted to kill me but failed. They fired guns at me very well, but the prayers of you, my fathers, saved me," Igboho said. He revealed that when he opened the door, the operatives saw his cat on the bed and, following the instructions from his alleged betrayer, killed the cat and wrapped it in clothes like a corpse.

The 2021 raid sparked widespread condemnation from prominent Nigerians, including Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, and socio-political groups who accused the government of abusing state power. The incident left two people dead and property destroyed.

The ancient city of Ile-Ife witnessed a historic and emotional moment on Saturday as Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, visited the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, to tender an unreserved apology and seek forgiveness.

The visit, which drew a large gathering of Yoruba traditional rulers, chiefs, and supporters, marked a turning point in Igboho’s relationship with the revered monarch. Speaking at the Ooni’s palace, Igboho admitted to past mistakes and expressed deep remorse for his previous criticisms of the Ooni.

"I have offended the Ooni in the past, and I am here to seek his forgiveness. Whoever I may have offended should please forgive me. I never knew Kabiyesi would honour me in this manner," Igboho stated emotionally, adding that no one dared insult a royal father.

Igboho revealed that during his imprisonment in the Benin Republic, he was astonished to learn of the Ooni’s efforts in securing his release despite his earlier criticisms. He appealed to Oba Ogunwusi to use his influence to facilitate the removal of his name from the security watchlist and to assist in unfreezing his bank accounts.

"My priority remains the security of Yorubaland. Our people are being killed, and we cannot continue like this. Kabiyesi, please help us to make this possible," Igboho pleaded.

“The right thing to do is not to stop the scheme but to go after the corrupt individuals, prosecute them to the full extent of the law, and bring sanity into the system. That’s what we ought to have done,” Kachikwu said.

“President Tinubu didn’t remove the fuel subsidy. We must be careful about saying that the President removed fuel subsidies on the day of inauguration. Late President Buhari removed the fuel subsidy. He didn’t provide for it in the budget. President Tinubu came in, saw that there was no provision for fuel subsidy, and merely made the announcement,” Kachikwu stated.

He added that many Nigerians mistakenly attribute the removal of subsidies to Tinubu, when in reality, it was a continuation of Buhari’s policy decision.

The Federal Government has sounded the alarm over Nigeria’s worsening malnutrition crisis, which costs the nation an estimated $1.5 billion annually in lost productivity and economic potential. Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, revealed this during a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, August 23, 2025. He described malnutrition as both a health and economic emergency, calling for immediate intervention to reverse the troubling trend.

Speaking at the Nutrition Society of Nigeria’s conference, Bagudu highlighted the devastating impact of micronutrient deficiencies on millions of Nigerians, particularly children under five. He noted that Nigeria ranks second globally in malnutrition, with 40% of children stunted and 8% suffering from wasting, according to the 2023-2024 National Demographic and Health Survey. “Malnutrition is not just a health issue; it’s an economic burden that stifles development. We are prioritizing nutrition in our National Development Plan to reverse this trend,” Bagudu stated.

The economic toll is staggering, with stunted adults earning 20% less than their peers, perpetuating poverty cycles and reducing workforce productivity. Healthcare costs are also significantly higher due to malnutrition-related illnesses, further straining the country’s resources.

In response, the government has launched the National Multisectoral Plan of Action for Food and Nutrition and the N-774 Initiative, which focuses on grassroots-level interventions.
