The Executive Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, Hon. (Barr.) Oluyemisi Adenike Rosiji, has charged young people in the area to reject cultism, drug abuse, violence and other destructive influences, warning that such activities could derail their educational aspirations and destroy their future.

Rosiji gave the warning on Thursday while presenting free General Certificate of Education (GCE) forms to indigent students and youths at the Ojokoro LCDA Secretariat.

The Chairman urged the beneficiaries to see the opportunity as a responsibility to work towards a better future, rather than merely as government assistance.

“This is an opportunity, not merely a gift. Please make the most of it. Study diligently, prepare adequately and listen to your teachers and mentors,” she told the students.

She particularly cautioned them against examination malpractice, drug abuse, cultism, violence and other negative influences capable of jeopardising their education and future.

According to her, young people must understand that while their circumstances may influence where they begin their journey, they should not allow those circumstances to determine where they eventually end up.

“Your background may explain where you started, but it does not have to determine where you will finish,” she said.

The council boss further challenged the beneficiaries to embrace discipline, hard work, knowledge and perseverance, stressing that youths are not merely leaders of tomorrow but important partners in the development of Ojokoro today.

The Chairman’s warning came as her administration provided free GCE forms to indigent students, in what she described as an effort to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent young people from pursuing their educational aspirations.

She recalled that the council had earlier provided free JAMB forms to eligible youths, describing both interventions as part of her administration’s broader commitment to education and human capital development.

Rosiji also urged the beneficiaries to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to their communities, while promising to reward beneficiaries who possess Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a way of encouraging responsible civic participation and patriotism among the youths.

Earlier, the Council Manager, Dr. Idowu Daisi Banjoko, commended the Chairman for what he described as her people-oriented and developmental approach to governance.

Banjoko urged the beneficiaries to justify the opportunity by studying hard and coming out in flying colours, adding that there were still more opportunities ahead for young people under the administration.

Also speaking, the Supervisor for Education and Library Services, Hon. Busari, urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gesture through academic excellence and responsible conduct.

For many of the students, the intervention represents more than assistance with examination registration. It is an opportunity to take another step towards their educational goals and a reminder that the choices they make today can either open doors to their future or close them.

Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) on Thursday, September 25, 2025, held its annual Spelling Bee Competition at the Council Multipurpose Hall, Foke, with outstanding performances from both primary and secondary school pupils.

The event, which drew wide participation from schools across the council, was a platform to showcase the intelligence, confidence, and determination of young learners.

Representing the Chairperson of Egbe-Idimu LCDA was Mrs. Ayinde Adebukola, wife of the Vice Chairman, while the Executive Chairman, Hon. Prince Idris Balogun, also made a brief appearance to encourage and inspire the contestants during the keenly contested competition.

Speaking at the event held on Thursday, 25th September 2025 at the Council Secretariat, Hon. Rosiji noted that education remains the bedrock of sustainable development and assured that her administration will continue to prioritize policies and programmes that encourage creativity, discipline, and academic excellence. She stressed that in the coming months, more innovative projects will spring up to further support the growth of learning across Ojokoro.

The Chairman recalled that only yesterday, her administration flagged off the distribution of free customized exercise books to all public schools in Ojokoro LCDA as part of a “Welcome Back to School” package, aimed at supporting pupils and easing the financial burden on parents.

Hon. Rosiji also used the occasion to advise pupils to shun truancy, cultism, and other social vices that could derail their future. According to her, “While spelling words correctly is important, what is more important is spelling out a good future for yourselves through discipline, focus, and hard work.”

After much drilling in spellings, the competition produced winners. In the Primary School Category, Miss Biobaku Oluwaferami from Ebenezer Primary School emerged winner, while Miss Odeh Anabel of Vetland Primary School came 1st runner-up, and Master Akinduro Ezekiel from Gbeleyi Primary School took the 2nd runner-up position.

In the Secondary School Category, Master Taiwo Daniel from Ijaiye-Ojokoro High School clinched the top prize, with Miss Mustapha Victoria of Vetland Grammar School as 1st runner-up, and Miss Ismail Royhannah as 2nd runner-up.

The winners, who were decorated with medals and presented prizes, will represent Ojokoro LCDA at the state level. The competition ended on a joyous note, with cheers from pupils and teachers celebrating their colleagues’ and students' achievements.

In his closing remark, the Head of Education and Library Services, Mr. Tajudeen Quadri, appreciated the Chairman for her unwavering support to the education sector. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared its readiness to embark on what it terms the “mother of all strikes” unless the Federal Government fulfills its promises regarding the 2009 agreement aimed at revitalizing public universities. Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday in Calabar, Dr. Peter Ubi, chairman of the University of Calabar (Unical) chapter, said the union is prepared to commence industrial action once the national body gives the directive after its August 28 meeting.

Dr. Ubi highlighted the union’s demands, which include renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, sustainable funding for Nigerian universities, revitalization of decaying infrastructure, and the payment of outstanding wage awards and salary arrears. He criticized the government for failing to resolve these issues despite repeated negotiations, stating, “Unfortunately, government, in its characteristics, has paid deaf ears to our demands and has constantly pushed our union to embark on strike. We are therefore left with no option but to strike.”

The Unical chapter also raised concerns over the proliferation of universities across the country, calling for a halt to the establishment of private universities. Dr. Ubi argued that the unchecked growth of tertiary institutions without adequate standards poses a threat to academic quality. “We currently have 72 federal universities and 159 private universities, bringing the total to 339 universities, giving each state and the FCT an average of nine universities, excluding polytechnics and colleges of education. Extending the moratorium to private institutions will help ensure quality over quantity,” he said.

The call for restraint aligns with the Federal Government’s recent decision to impose a seven-year moratorium on the establishment of new federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The government cited the proliferation of underutilized institutions, overstretched resources, and declining academic quality as reasons for the freeze. Despite this, the Federal Executive Council recently approved nine new universities, sparking concerns about policy inconsistency. Critics, including ASUU, argue that resources should be directed toward strengthening existing institutions rather than creating new ones.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike if their long-standing demands for the revitalization and proper funding of Nigeria's public universities are not met. Speaking at a press conference held at the University of Jos, ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna accused the government of neglecting its commitments to university lecturers, citing years of unfulfilled promises, failed negotiations, and disregard for the union's demands.

The union's grievances include the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, unpaid salary arrears, withheld promotions, and the welfare of retired academics. Prof. Piwuna lamented that retired professors earn as low as ₦150,000 monthly despite decades of service, highlighting the dire state of academic welfare in the country.

Prof. Piwuna expressed frustration over the government's lack of response to ASUU's pleas, stating, "The Nigerian public should note that ASUU has written several letters to the Federal Government, appealing for an amicable resolution of these crises. He criticized the government's proposed Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Loan Scheme, calling it a "trap" that fails to address lecturers' needs.
