President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a significant subsidy on kidney dialysis, slashing the cost per session in federal hospitals from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000. This initiative, announced on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Information, Daniel Bwala, aims to bring relief to thousands of Nigerians grappling with kidney-related illnesses.

According to Bwala, the reduced pricing has already been implemented in key federal hospitals across the six geopolitical zones. These include *FMC Ebute-Metta, Lagos; FMC Jabi, Abuja; University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan; FMC Owerri; University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri; FMC Abeokuta; Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH); FMC Azare; University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin; and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar*. He added that more federal medical centres and teaching hospitals will be included in the program before the year ends to ensure wider access for Nigerians.

This measure is part of President Tinubu’s broader healthcare reform under the Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to make medical services more affordable and accessible. Bwala also highlighted that this is not the administration’s first major healthcare intervention. Last year, President Tinubu approved *free caesarean sections (C-sections)* for pregnant women in federal hospitals, a policy aimed at reducing maternal mortality and improving maternal health outcomes.

The initiative to cut dialysis costs by 76% is expected to ease the financial burden on patients who often require multiple sessions weekly, ensuring that no Nigerian is denied critical healthcare due to cost.
