BREAKING: HOUSE OF REPS APPROVES BILL TO INCREASE LAGOS LGAs FROM 20 to 57

BREAKING: HOUSE OF REPS APPROVES BILL TO INCREASE LAGOS LGAs FROM 20 to 57

In a significant legislative move, the House of Representatives has approved a bill to recognize Lagos State's 37 Development Area Councils as full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs). If signed into law, this development will increase the number of LGAs in Lagos from 20 to 57, making it the state with the highest number of LGAs in Nigeria.

The bill, titled _A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), to Accommodate the Thirty-Seven (37) Development Area Councils of Lagos State as Full-Fledged Local Government Areas_, was one of 42 constitutional amendment bills passed by the House on Wednesday. Co-sponsored by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke (Ikeja Federal Constituency), Hon. Babajimi Benson (Ikorodu Federal Constituency), Hon. Enitan Dolapo Badru (Lagos Island I Federal Constituency), and 19 other lawmakers, the bill successfully scaled through its second reading under the leadership of Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

If enacted, this legislation will raise the total number of LGAs in Nigeria from 774 to 811, solidifying Lagos’ position as the state with the most LGAs, surpassing Kano (44) and Katsina (34). The bill aims to enhance grassroots governance and improve administrative efficiency in Lagos' rapidly growing urban areas.
