Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party has been declared winner of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, defeating his closest challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a keenly contested poll.

Adeleke secured 491,975 votes to emerge victorious, while Oyebamiji polled 425,731 votes, giving the incumbent governor a decisive 66,244-vote margin.

The victory, announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the completion of collation at the state collation centre in Osogbo, means Adeleke will return to the Bola Ige House for another four-year term.

ADELEKE TAKES 19 LGAS, APC WINS 11

The Accord Party candidate dominated the overall LGA spread, winning 19 of Osun's 30 Local Government Areas, while Oyebamiji and the APC secured victories in the remaining 11 LGAs.

The result caps a fiercely fought election in which the APC mounted a major challenge to Adeleke's hold on the state.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished a distant third with 16,513 votes, according to the final figures reported following the declaration.

A SECOND TERM FOR ADELEKE

Adeleke's victory gives him a second consecutive term as governor of Osun State, although his political platform has changed from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he won the 2022 election, to the Accord Party.

His latest victory also represents another setback for the APC, which had hoped to reclaim Osun State after losing the governorship to Adeleke in 2022.

The 2026 contest had been closely watched nationally, particularly because of the political rivalry between the Adeleke camp and the APC.

OYEBAMIJI'S STRONG CHALLENGE FALLS SHORT

Although Oyebamiji mounted a formidable challenge and won 11 LGAs, his performance was not enough to overcome Adeleke's advantage across several of the governor's traditional strongholds.

Adeleke recorded particularly strong performances in areas including Ede North and Ede South, while also securing Osogbo, the state capital.

The final figures therefore confirmed what had become increasingly evident during the collation: the election had developed into a two-horse race, but Adeleke maintained the upper hand until the final result was announced.

POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The outcome is significant for both camps.

For Adeleke, it is a fresh mandate to continue his administration and consolidate his political influence in the state.

For the APC, the defeat means another four years outside the Osun Government House and raises questions about the party's strategy ahead of future electoral contests in the state.

The election was also marked by strong voter interest and some reported security and operational challenges during voting and collation.

INEC nevertheless proceeded with the collation of results from all 30 LGAs before the final declaration.

ADELEKE'S NEW MANDATE

With 491,975 votes, 19 LGA victories and a 66,244-vote advantage, Adeleke has secured a fresh mandate from Osun voters.

The result marks the conclusion of one of the state's most closely watched political contests and hands Adeleke another four years at the helm of the State of the Living Spring.

The battle for the Osun State Government House has entered its decisive stage, with incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke maintaining a commanding lead as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) races to complete the collation of results from Saturday’s governorship election.

As of 12:03 a.m. on Sunday, INEC had uploaded 3,557 of the 3,763 expected polling-unit results, representing 94.53 per cent of the results, on its Result Viewing (IReV) portal.

The latest development leaves only 206 polling-unit results outstanding as collation continues across the state’s 30 Local Government Areas.

Earlier results collated from 24 LGAs placed Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, firmly ahead of his closest challenger, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

According to figures reported after results from 24 LGAs had been released, Adeleke had secured 347,730 votes, while Oyebamiji had polled 283,653 votes. African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam was placed a distant third with 13,143 votes at that stage.

The same collation showed Accord winning 16 of the 24 LGAs reported, while the APC had won eight. However, those figures remain subject to the completion of the statutory collation process and should not be regarded as the final result.

THE FINAL STRETCH

With more than 94 per cent of polling-unit results now uploaded, attention has shifted to the remaining results that could determine the final margin between the leading contenders.

The election has attracted intense interest because of the political weight attached to the contest.

For Adeleke, victory would secure another term in office and consolidate the Accord Party's hold on the state.

For Oyebamiji and the APC, a comeback would return the party to the Osun Government House after losing the state to Adeleke in the 2022 governorship election.

Salaam and the ADC have also remained part of the contest, although the emerging figures have placed the two leading candidates considerably ahead.

SECURITY CONCERNS

The election was not without incidents.

Reports emerged of the destruction of electoral materials at a polling unit in Ejigbo, while a collation centre in Osogbo was reportedly invaded by gunmen who fired into the air, temporarily disrupting the exercise.

Despite the reported incidents, voting was completed across the state and the focus has now shifted almost entirely to the collation and declaration of results.

INEC HOLDS THE FINAL WORD

The electronic uploading of polling-unit results has provided the public with an opportunity to monitor the process, but the figures circulating online remain provisional until INEC completes the official collation.

For now, Adeleke is in front, Oyebamiji is the principal challenger, and the race remains officially undecided.

All eyes are now on the remaining results and the final declaration by INEC.

Incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji and African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam were among the major contenders in the election, which attracted voters across the state's 30 Local Government Areas.

The election, held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, was largely followed by intense political interest, with the outcome expected to determine who occupies the Bola Ige House for the next four years.

INEC’s electronic Result Viewing (IReV) portal showed rapid uploads of polling-unit results after voting and counting ended. By Saturday night, thousands of the 3,763 expected polling-unit results had been uploaded, with the figure subsequently rising to more than 3,500, representing over 94 per cent of the expected results.

ADELEKE SEEKS SECOND TERM

Governor Ademola Adeleke entered the election seeking a fresh mandate after winning the 2022 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party before subsequently moving to the Accord Party.

Adeleke expressed confidence in victory after casting his vote at his polling unit in Ede North, urging his supporters to remain vigilant and protect their votes.

Early results uploaded to the IReV portal showed the incumbent recording victories at several polling units, including units in Osogbo and Ede, while Accord also secured notable results in areas considered politically significant.

OYEBAMIJI MOUNTS STRONG APC CHALLENGE

For the APC, Bola Oyebamiji represents the party's effort to reclaim Osun after its defeat in the 2022 election.

Oyebamiji, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, also expressed confidence in his chances after voting in his hometown of Ikire.

The APC candidate's camp has remained optimistic as results emerged, with the party recording victories in a number of polling units. Notably, APC won at the polling unit of former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola in Ilesa, while Oyebamiji's hometown also produced closely watched results.

However, Accord also recorded a significant result in Ikire, with 320 votes against APC's 156 at one polling unit associated with Senator Lere Oyewumi, a prominent Adeleke supporter.

SALAAM AND ADC SEEK UPSET

The ADC's Najeem Salaam has also remained a major factor in the contest. The former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly entered the race as one of the strongest challengers outside the two dominant camps.

However, the electoral process was not without incidents. Reports emerged of disruptions at some polling and collation centres, including an incident in Ejigbo where electoral materials were reportedly destroyed following an attack by suspected political thugs.

There were also reports of gunmen invading a collation centre in Osogbo later in the night, firing into the air and temporarily disrupting the collation process.

RESULTS STILL BEING COLLATED

Despite the emergence of several polling-unit winners and competing claims of strength by the major parties, the overall winner of the election cannot yet be determined from individual polling-unit results.

INEC remains the only authority empowered to officially declare the winner after the complete results have been collated and the statutory requirements satisfied.

The electronic transmission of results has nevertheless provided members of the public with access to a substantial portion of the results through the IReV platform.

The 2026 contest has attracted particular attention because of the political significance of Osun, a state that has witnessed closely fought governorship elections in recent years. In 2022, Adeleke defeated then-incumbent APC Governor Gboyega Oyetola, polling 403,371 votes against Oyetola's 375,027.

As collation continues, attention is now firmly fixed on the final figures from the remaining polling units and Local Government Areas.

For Adeleke, the moment could deliver a second term and consolidate his political hold on the state.

For Oyebamiji and the APC, victory would represent a major comeback.

For Salaam and the ADC, a strong showing could significantly reshape Osun's political landscape.

The Executive Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, Hon. (Barr.) Oluyemisi Adenike Rosiji, has charged young people in the area to reject cultism, drug abuse, violence and other destructive influences, warning that such activities could derail their educational aspirations and destroy their future.

Rosiji gave the warning on Thursday while presenting free General Certificate of Education (GCE) forms to indigent students and youths at the Ojokoro LCDA Secretariat.

The Chairman urged the beneficiaries to see the opportunity as a responsibility to work towards a better future, rather than merely as government assistance.

“This is an opportunity, not merely a gift. Please make the most of it. Study diligently, prepare adequately and listen to your teachers and mentors,” she told the students.

She particularly cautioned them against examination malpractice, drug abuse, cultism, violence and other negative influences capable of jeopardising their education and future.

According to her, young people must understand that while their circumstances may influence where they begin their journey, they should not allow those circumstances to determine where they eventually end up.

“Your background may explain where you started, but it does not have to determine where you will finish,” she said.

The council boss further challenged the beneficiaries to embrace discipline, hard work, knowledge and perseverance, stressing that youths are not merely leaders of tomorrow but important partners in the development of Ojokoro today.

The Chairman’s warning came as her administration provided free GCE forms to indigent students, in what she described as an effort to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent young people from pursuing their educational aspirations.

She recalled that the council had earlier provided free JAMB forms to eligible youths, describing both interventions as part of her administration’s broader commitment to education and human capital development.

Rosiji also urged the beneficiaries to become responsible citizens and contribute positively to their communities, while promising to reward beneficiaries who possess Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as a way of encouraging responsible civic participation and patriotism among the youths.

The beneficiaries were enrolled during the Third Phase (Grand Finale) of the exercise held on Wednesday 8th July, bringing to a successful close the Council's three-phase health insurance intervention aimed at providing vulnerable residents with one year of uninterrupted access to healthcare services at accredited hospitals across Lagos State.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Rosiji reaffirmed her administration's commitment to prioritising the wellbeing of residents, stressing that access to quality healthcare should not be determined by one's financial status. She noted that beneficiaries from the first and second phases are already enjoying the benefits of the scheme and urged the new enrollees to make good use of the opportunity by embracing preventive healthcare and avoiding self-medication.

In a renewed effort to strengthen internal security and prevent criminal infiltration of commercial transport operations, Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has intensified measures aimed at identifying and monitoring all motorcycle and tricycle operators within its jurisdiction.

The security-driven initiative was reinforced at a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday, June 11, at the Community Development Committee (CDC) Hall, Temple Road, Ojokoro and convened by the Executive Chairman of Ojokoro LCDA, Hon. (Barr.) Oluyemisi Adenike Rosiji.

The meeting brought together leaders of commercial motorcycle (Okada) and tricycle operators, community stakeholders, and security agencies, with discussions focused on strengthening intelligence gathering, improving operator identification, and blocking possible security loopholes within the transport sector.

Addressing participants, Hon. Rosiji warned that the council would no longer tolerate a situation where unidentified individuals operate within the transport system, stressing that such gaps pose serious security risks to residents.

She emphasized that all operators must be properly registered and integrated into a verifiable communication structure that allows for effective monitoring and rapid response in the event of security threats.

According to her, a comprehensive database of all motorcycle and tricycle operators will be developed, capturing critical details such as identities, residential addresses, and vehicle registration information.

She further stated that any group of operators that cannot be properly identified or accounted for risks suspension or outright ban from operating within the council area.

Chairman of the Security Committee and Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ojokoro Branch, Pastor C.G. Coker, backed the initiative, describing it as a necessary step to block criminal elements from exploiting the transport sector.

He called for compulsory registration of all operators, strict documentation of plate numbers and addresses, regulation of operational hours, and the introduction of uniforms or reflective jackets with clear identification numbers to enhance visibility and accountability.

Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Alhaji Adeyemi, raised concerns over the presence of unknown individuals operating within some parks, warning that such gaps could be exploited by criminals to blend into the system.

He stressed that without proper identification, it becomes difficult for security agencies and union leaders to distinguish legitimate operators from criminal elements.

Security agencies present at the meeting reinforced the urgency of the initiative.

The Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) Commandant, Randle, urged transport unions to strengthen cooperation with security operatives by providing timely intelligence and refusing to shield offenders.

Representatives of the Nigeria Police Force commended motorcycle operators for their past cooperation, noting that information supplied by union members had contributed to the arrest of suspected criminals and recovery of illegal weapons within Ojokoro and urged them to continue in such gesture.

The police, however, warned that tricycle operators must tighten internal monitoring, as criminal elements have been observed exploiting tricycles to target unsuspecting commuters.

At the end of the meeting, stakeholders unanimously agreed on key security measures, including compulsory registration of all operators, creation of a centralized database, mandatory use of identifiable uniforms, and strict enforcement of valid motorcycle plate numbers across Ojokoro LCDA.
